Bullet Dodging
My weekend started out a little different than most. I experienced my first, and hopefully last, motherboard failure this weekend. It’s a really bad sensation to fire up the main computer and nothing but whirring case fans. No screen, no beeps, nothing but the case fan blasting dust out the back of the computer case. After trying to restart the computer for the 20th time, thoughts of corrupt hard drives, lost data and basically a year of shit down the drain, all I could do is sit and swear up a storm.
But I am happy to report that all is back to normal after gutting the computer and swapping out the motherboard. The new board will support a quad-core…...hmmmm maybe not so bad after all.

Mt Hood Skibowl #4
Good racing at Mt Hood Skibowl #4. The last couple times I have been down the weather was not cooperating, but this weekend was perfect. I ended up staying with Clinton and Nate from Project 529. They had heard the legend of my snoring, but thought it was an exageration, a legend, a story told to small children to make them eat their supper. But appearently it lived up to the hype and ended up being asked to sleep elsewhere. The Grubworks production van was full of stuff, so I stayed in the Project 529 race van. It was more roomy than "Casa de Mazda", but the mazda remains my home away from home.

Bearclaw Invitational
The second annual “Bearclaw Invitational” was an “Invitational” in every sense of the word.
I was all set to hit Vancouver Island after our trip to Oregon. While at Crankworx, I got a call from Brent from Mt. Washington and said that even though I had already arranged, and been granted, "all access" media credentials, Darren Berecloth was personally reviewing all media creds and said that since Darren was limiting the media down to Freeride and the Collective, RipTV and a few other industry insiders. Since we are not one of the heavies, we were stuck with “Media Corral Access” which is otherwise known as “Bitch Pass”. Basically it's a media pass that is not good for anything, but is supposed to make you happy enough to not bitch about it.
Joe Perrizo and I headed up early Friday morning. Unaware that this was long Canadian weekend, we missed a couple ferries and finally got to Mt. Washington late afternoon. Joe practiced, showing his stuff on the last half of the course. Backflip to backflip on the last doubles. Damn mosquitoes / flies were intense, you can see them in most of the video from practice.
The only restaurant / bar on the mountain closed early for a private party. We met some really cool island locals in the parking lot, but had to get something to eat. So we jam down to Courtney for some food, then back up to the mountain to ghetto camp in the parking lot.
The comp went off Saturday, but damn, it didn’t actually start till 3:30, I'm guessing that the sun needed to go down a bit so the cable-cam lines wouldnt show in thier shots, or they needed more time to sell more $5 hotdogs. Good course and good riding. Joe had a tough time and didn’t land the stepdown on his hardtail and really couldn’t finish out his run. Andrew Taylor did well. Andrew is having a really good year. (Watch for Andrew and Mitch Chubey on the new DropIn).
Congrats to Cam McCall on his win. I cant say enough on how much I like that guy’s attitude.
On a side note, same as last year, Darren seems to micromanage every aspect of the comp, I guess that is how he “gives back to the riders”. With all the criticism of Crankworx year’s past, now evolving away from the “invitational” format, I think it’s kind of hypocritical for a rider to put on an "invitational" comp. Last year, the un-invited riders that showed up saved the event. Just call it what it is, “Exclusive video shoot for Freeride, Collective, RipTV and the event sponsors of a select list of riders”. It might be too long to fit on a T-shirt, but it would be accurate.
The “bitch-pass” corrals were empty. I blatantly poached positions every chance I had, within reason of course.
Again, we met another group of really cool people in the parking lot, but no time to hang, had to leave to catch the ferry.
Due to some ferry maintenance delays, we were able to catch the hour late ferry that we would have missed if it was on time. Long drive home……….. I’m tired.
Oregon Vacation
After I got home from Crankworx, the family loaded up the minivan and headed down to the Oregon coast. Good time. Went to Tillamook to check out the cheese factory, which is kinda a tradition as far as making it a stop when on the Oregon coast.
We stayed in Newport and went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. We tried to hit the beach but the wind was pretty intense. Nice beaches though really different than the ones aroud Seaside. Around the corner from our hotel, I was very happy to find the Rouge Brewery. Awesome place.
We finally god some beach time. Then headed home. We found another Rouge Pub on the way home. Again, awesome place.
